China Railway 20th Bureau Group Mozambique Limited (CR20 Mozambique) recently completed maintenance work using heavy equipment to tamp the Nacala Corridor railway line, thereby ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of freight trains serving the north of the country.
The 912-kilometre line connects the coal-producing region of Moatize, in Tete province, to the deep-water port of Nacala, crossing Malawi, and transports around 18 million tonnes of cargo per year.
Given the high volume of traffic, the line cannot be closed for extended periods.
Accordingly, track tamping, alignment correction and ballast replenishment are carried out during scheduled track possession windows, using heavy machinery and under the supervision of the project owner and inspection teams.
Before each reopening, a joint inspection of the condition of the line is conducted.
According to the company, track irregularities have decreased significantly, with speed restrictions and temporary stoppages caused by infrastructure problems having been eliminated. This contributes to the stability of the corridor and the national economy.
The heavy mechanised maintenance carried out by CR20 Mozambique included track tamping, alignment correction and ballast replenishment, ensuring improved safety and efficiency in freight rail transport.
Inaugurated in 2016, the Nacala corridor rail line includes 650 kilometres built and maintained by China Railway 20th Bureau Group Mozambique Limited (CR20 Mozambique).
