MEREC Industries, SU, SA, a subsidiary of Invictus Investment PLC, has announced the construction of the first pasta factory in northern Mozambique, a strategic investment that will strengthen national production capacity and boost the region’s industrial and economic development.

With this project, MEREC will become the only company in Mozambique with pasta production facilities in all three regions of the country: North, Centre and South.

Eduardo Abdula, Governor of Nampula Province, visited the site of MEREC’s new project on Tuesday, 3 November, to assess progress on construction of the new industrial facility, which will strengthen domestic production, increase the availability of fortified food products and create new employment opportunities.

The new industrial facility will significantly expand national pasta production capacity, bringing production closer to consumers, particularly in the northern region.

One of the project’s main contributions will also be to increase the availability of quality, fortified pasta products, in compliance with the legislation and national requirements applicable to food fortification.

In this way, MEREC aims to contribute to access to food products that form part of national efforts to promote nutrition and food security.

In addition to its impact on the food sector, the project will have significant economic and social benefits through the creation of direct and indirect employment opportunities, the training and development of local skills, and the involvement of different sectors of the value chain, including production, logistics, distribution and marketing.

According to MEREC Director, Engineer Luís Aveleira, this investment represents another step in the company’s growth strategy and its commitment to the development of national industry.

“Today, pasta is part of the basic food basket of Mozambicans and, with this investment, we want to help ensure that Mozambique has the capacity to meet the needs of its own market, reducing dependence on imported products. With industrial facilities in the North, Centre and South, we are strengthening our capacity to supply the entire country and contributing to the country’s objectives of promoting local production and import substitution.

“More than ensuring supply to the domestic market, we also want to create the capacity to generate production surpluses for export, contributing to foreign currency earnings and the growth of the national economy. We believe that investing in domestic production means investing in food security, industrialisation and the future of Mozambique,” said Engineer Aveleira.

Alongside this investment in the northern region, MEREC is also expanding pasta production capacity at its industrial facility in Machava, in the southern region, strengthening its ability to meet the needs of the national market.

For the Governor of Nampula, beyond expanding its industrial capacity, MEREC will actively contribute to a Mozambique with greater production capacity, lower dependence on imports and an increasingly significant role in regional trade.
