The Government and the Mozambican Federation of Transport Operators (FEMATRO) have reached an agreement establishing an extraordinary financial compensation measure for public passenger transport operators. As a result, public transport fares in the Greater Maputo metropolitan area will not increase from today.
National Director of Transport and Safety Alberto Matusse gave the assurance yesterday evening, saying that passengers would be able to continue using public transport services at the current fares, with no increase under the agreement.
Matusse said that, to make this solution possible, the Government had agreed with FEMATRO to implement an extraordinary compensation mechanism for transport operators, aimed at easing pressure on operating costs and helping to maintain their operations.
“Under this mechanism, compensation payments will range from 25,000 to 90,000 meticais, depending on the type and category of vehicle, reflecting the different characteristics and operational needs of the services provided,” he explained.
The National Director of Transport and Safety added that this is an extraordinary and temporary measure, which will remain in force for three months. “During this period, the Government and representatives of the operators will monitor its implementation, assess the results achieved and analyse the conditions necessary to ensure the continuity and sustainability of public transport services,” Alberto Matusse said.
