A total of 119 champions are covered by this initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP), implemented by the Blue Economy Development Fund (ProAzul) with funding from the World Bank through the MaisPeixe Sustentável programme.
Through GALS (Gender Action Learning System), coastal communities benefit from training aimed at adopting socially accepted tools within their families.
To enable them to continue disseminating GALS in their communities, champions of the system in the districts of Moma, Ilha de Moçambique and Mossuril received a kit last week comprising bicycles, backpacks, T-shirts, caps, smartphones, GALS manuals, notebooks and pens.

The deliveries in these locations were made by Moma District Permanent Secretary Albino Mucuna, representing the District Administrator; Josina Taipo, Administrator of Ilha de Moçambique; and Mossuril District Administrator Élio Rareque.
During the handover ceremonies, the officials expressed their desire to continue working with coastal communities to disseminate good gender-based practices.

Champion Atija Momade Alfane, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, explained to the Mossuril District Administrator what GALS is and stressed that the lessons learnt during the training had reinforced the need for sharing and unity within the family.
Champion Age Janfar reported that GALS had changed the way he viewed life, enabling him to manage the resources he earns from selling fish more effectively. He now owns a house and looks after his family, something he had been unable to do before.
