Mozambique’s Council of Ministers (Cabinet) on Tuesday approved the decree creating the Moamba Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The new Moamba SEZ covers an area of 64,000 hectares, encompassing parts of the administrative posts of Moamba-Sede, Pessene and Ressano Garcia, in Maputo province.
The project aims to boost the national productive sector, according to Government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa.
“The creation of the Moamba Special Economic Zone is intended to increase productive and commercial capacity, broaden the tax base and stimulate the creation of innovation ecosystems, promoting employment and contributing to the generation of foreign currency for the country through the concentration of incentive schemes, simplified procedures and mechanisms to facilitate investment,” Impissa said at the usual press conference following the Council of Ministers session.
Also during the Cabinet session, within the framework of public administration and salary adjustments, the Government approved amendments to Annexes 2 of Decrees No. 34/2023 and No. 35/2023, of 20 June, which regulate the remuneration of members of Sovereign Bodies and Public Bodies not covered by Law No. 5/2022.
The Government spokesperson explained that the review aims to ensure the consistency and currency of the remuneration system, taking into account the creation of new institutions and changes to their organisational structures, while avoiding gaps, overlaps or disparities in the treatment of positions carrying equivalent levels of responsibility.
In the area of financial integrity and the fight against organised crime, the Council approved a Resolution establishing the National System of Statistics on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.
Inocêncio Impissa highlighted that the platform will operate as a centralised national infrastructure for the collection, harmonisation, integration and analysis of data on money laundering and related matters, ensuring standards of consistency, timeliness and information security among the various participating institutions.
