Following the major fire that recently affected the premises of Infantário 1.º de Maio, the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) organised a solidarity initiative to support the children affected, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation and to supporting Mozambique’s most vulnerable communities.
On 15 October 2026, a delegation from EUMAM MOZ visited Infantário 1.º de Maio to assess first-hand the damage caused by the fire, which significantly affected the institution’s premises. During the visit, the Mission’s representatives expressed their solidarity with the nursery’s management and staff.
The delegation subsequently travelled to Matola Nursery, where the children had been temporarily relocated to ensure the continuity of the care and protection they require. The institution currently accommodates 107 children and adolescents, including 18 newborns.
During the visit, EUMAM MOZ donated essential supplies, including infant formula for newborns and children aged between one and three, foodstuffs for meal preparation, and school supplies. The items were purchased with funds raised among the Mission’s military personnel, reflecting their spirit of solidarity and individual commitment to supporting the children affected.
