Mozambique's tax authority, the Autoridade Tributária (AT), has launched a public competition to recruit 650 new staff members nationwide, aiming to reinforce tax revenue collection, fiscal enforcement, and customs control.
According to a notice approved by ministerial dispatch on 29 October and reviewed by Lusa, the competition offers 350 vacancies for Second-Class Tax Technicians and 300 for First-Class Tax Auxiliaries — a category covering customs and institutional security guards — distributed across the country's provinces and the AT's central services.
Maputo Province will absorb the largest share of new hires, with 90 vacancies, followed by Maputo City with 82, and the provinces of Sofala, Manica, and Cabo Delgado each receiving 60 posts. The remaining positions are spread across Nampula, Niassa, Tete, Zambézia, Gaza, and Inhambane, as well as the authority's central administrative units.
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the AT's online recruitment platform within 30 calendar days from 16 November.
Tax technicians will be responsible for tax administration and enforcement, taxpayer services, and the application of fiscal legislation. Guards will be assigned to institutional security duties and operational support for customs inspection and control activities.
The recruitment drive comes amid a broader push to mobilise domestic revenues and combat tax evasion. In 2025, the state collected approximately US$29 million in additional tax revenues through intensified audit activity and corporate accounting reviews, according to data from the Conta Geral do Estado — the government's general state accounts report.
The document records that tax authorities completed 535 audits during the period, surpassing the annual target by 34%. Those actions identified additional tax liabilities of approximately US$257 million, of which around US$24 million was effectively collected.
In parallel, the AT reviewed 4,050 corporate accounting files, equivalent to 135% of its 2025 target. The reviews uncovered roughly US$76 million in additional tax obligations, with approximately US$5 million recovered.
On the customs side, the Conta Geral do Estado records 1,106 seizures of goods during the year, encompassing smuggling, diversion, and other fiscal infractions. Those operations resulted in the recovery of approximately US$2.7 million in customs duties and other tax obligations.
