Mozambique’s Ministry of Health (MISAU) is assessing damage caused by a fire that struck the Oncology Unit of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) on Sunday, 1 November, with particular concern focused on the operational status of radiotherapy equipment. Although the flames did not directly reach that area, the intense heat may have compromised the highly sensitive apparatus.
According to Health Minister Ussene Isse, a multi-sector team has been deployed to evaluate the extent of the damage and verify the operational conditions of the equipment, which is considered highly susceptible to elevated temperatures.
The fire caused no fatalities or injuries. All 22 patients admitted to the Oncology Unit were safely evacuated; 12 were subsequently discharged, while the remaining ten were transferred to the Dermatology Unit, where they continue to receive medical care and psychological support.
To ensure continuity of care, MISAU activated an emergency plan and established a dedicated treatment unit for oncology patients, covering both inpatient admissions and outpatient therapy.
Ussene Isse also confirmed there is no risk of radioactive contamination as a result of the fire.
“The cobalt capsule used in radiotherapy treatments was safely removed and is properly secured, with technical support from the National Atomic Energy Agency,” he stated.
According to the minister, measurements taken in the vicinity of the unit detected no abnormal radiation levels, ruling out, according to authorities, any risk of exposure for patients, healthcare workers, or nearby residents.
Despite the safety assurances, the government’s primary concern remains the restoration of full capacity at the Oncology Unit and the assessment of the radiotherapy equipment.
The minister also urged the public to follow official communications and to refrain from spreading false or out-of-context information about the fire.
