Angola spent approximately $1.08 billion on fuel imports during the third quarter of 2026, a period in which purchases from abroad accounted for 74% of total fuel acquired for the domestic market, according to data from the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute (IRDP).
According to the Commercial Activity Summary for the Petroleum Derivatives Market, around 1.1 million tonnes of fuel were procured for commercial distribution between July and September, with diesel representing the largest share at 48% of the total, followed by petrol at 30.1%.
The volume acquired represents growth of approximately 8% compared with the second quarter of the year, according to Lusa.
In addition to the 74% sourced from imports, the IRDP noted that 24.5% of fuel supply originated from the Luanda Refinery and 1.5% from the Cabinda Topping unit, a processing facility associated with Cabgoc.
The institute attributed the high import bill to a broad-based rise in international market prices, linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Angola has an installed onshore fuel storage capacity of 1.2 million cubic metres, of which 1.1 million cubic metres are designated for liquid fuels.
LPG Segment
In the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) segment, predominantly used as cooking gas, approximately 148,000 metric tonnes were made available to the domestic market during the third quarter.
The Angola LNG plant accounted for 31.8% of supply, while the Sanha terminal contributed 26.4%, the Luanda Refinery 6.1%, and the Cabinda Topping unit 1.8%. Imports made up the remaining 33.9%.
According to the IRDP’s review, external purchases were necessary to offset the planned shutdown of the Angola LNG plant between 7 July and 16 August for maintenance works.
Despite the reliance on imports, total LPG procurement for the domestic market fell by approximately 6% compared with the previous quarter.
In this segment, Angola has an installed onshore storage capacity of 113,727 metric tonnes, bolstered by additional capacity associated with the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal.
