The Nampula Administrative Court has suspended construction of Metical Square in Jardim-Parque Popular, in the provincial capital, following an injunction filed by the Provincial Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate alleged irregularities involving land-use urban planning, safety and environmental protection.

Construction began to attract opposition shortly after the foundation stone was laid, when civil society organisations expressed their disagreement with the project being built in that public space.

The organisations questioned the occupation of Jardim-Parque Popular, arguing that public spaces should be preserved for collective use and the enjoyment of local residents.

The suspension is intended to prevent work from continuing while issues relating to compliance with the legal requirements governing the occupation and use of urban spaces are examined, with a view to ensuring that legality is restored and the public interest safeguarded.
