Gaza Province is set to host a new photovoltaic power plant representing an estimated investment of $126 million, aimed at strengthening electricity supply to mining companies and creating conditions for the local processing of mineral resources.

The project was presented on Monday, 19 October, in Nacala-Porto, Nampula Province, by Gaza Governor Alfeu Constantino Cuna, during a panel discussion on adding value to mineral and energy resources.

“We are counting on an investment of around $126 million, specifically to install a photovoltaic facility through the company Golden East Engineering,” the governor stated.

According to Alfeu Cuna, the plant is intended to support companies operating in the Chibuto region, including Dingxiang, and to encourage the establishment of industrial activities linked to mining operations.

The governor also highlighted the Lionde and Xai-Xai substations and the existing electricity transmission lines within the province. In areas with limestone deposits, such as Mabalane and Mapai, he pointed to the availability of energy as a key prerequisite for installing raw material processing units.

To facilitate investor entry, the provincial government is demarcating areas with mining potential and organising land allocation for the projects. Among the identified resources are heavy sands in Chibuto and along the coastal strip, as well as limestone, which can be used in the production of cement and other construction materials.

On the logistics side, Alfeu Cuna referenced road and rail connections and the international airport as supporting infrastructure for the movement of people and goods. He further indicated that plans are under consideration for the construction of a deep-water port and the creation of a special economic zone near the airport and mining exploitation areas.

The initiatives seek to create the conditions for a greater share of resources to be processed within the province, through the coordination of energy supply, logistical infrastructure, and the establishment of industrial facilities.
