Panerai has unveiled three new models in its Luminor collection featuring 42-millimetre cases, marking a deliberate move towards more compact proportions while retaining the robust design language that defines the Italian watchmaker. The references PAM01710, PAM01711, and PAM01714 retain the brand's signature crown-protection mechanism, offer water resistance to 500 metres, and are priced from €6,500.
The new pieces represent an evolution of the design Panerai introduced in 1993, when the brand entered the civilian market with 44mm Luminor watches inspired by the 47mm military models that had preceded them.
More than three decades on, the manufacturer has adapted that architecture to a 42mm format in response to demand for watches that are more comfortable for everyday wear. Despite the reduction in diameter, the new Luminor models preserve the angular case lines, robust lugs, and the characteristic crown-protection device that have long defined the collection.
At 13.8 millimetres thick, all three models feature a domed sapphire crystal, a screwed steel caseback, and 50-bar water resistance — equivalent to a reference depth of 500 metres.
The new range comprises three configurations that differ primarily in dial colour, finishing materials, and strap options. The PAM01710 pairs a polished and satin-brushed steel case with a matte black dial and a beige canvas strap. The PAM01711 uses the same case construction but features a khaki green dial with a matching textile strap. The PAM01714 takes a darker aesthetic, with a steel case coated in DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) — a surface treatment designed to enhance scratch and wear resistance — complemented by a matte blue dial and a strap in the same colour.
All three watches feature numerals and indices treated with Super-LumiNova luminescent material, applied via a printing process directly onto the dial rather than through the traditional layered construction known as the sandwich technique. They also retain the small seconds indicator at the nine o'clock position, a historic hallmark of the Luminor line.
Inside, the new models are powered by the automatic P.980 calibre, which measures 4.2 millimetres in thickness, incorporates 23 jewels, and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The movement delivers a 72-hour power reserve from a single mainspring barrel and includes a seconds-stop function to allow for precise time-setting. A transversal balance bridge enhances the stability of the mechanism, while an integrated shock-protection system adds further resilience to the movement.
The combination of a more compact format and the same technical specifications as larger Luminor models is intended to attract consumers who value the Panerai identity but find traditional sizes too bulky for daily use. The brand had previously explored smaller formats in collections such as the Luminor Due; however, the new references distinguish themselves by preserving the classic Luminor architecture alongside 500-metre water resistance. Each model is supplied with a canvas strap, and alternative straps compatible with the respective attachment system can also be fitted.
The PAM01710 and PAM01711 are each priced at €6,500, while the DLC-coated PAM01714 carries a retail price of €7,500. All three references join Panerai's permanent collection, extending the brand's offer to a format that seeks to reconcile the heritage of the diving watch with more versatile everyday wearability.
