Mozambique's National Meteorology Institute (INAM) has issued a warning of an intense heatwave affecting the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane between 15 and 19 October, during which maximum temperatures could range between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius.

According to the meteorological alert, published on Wednesday (14 October) and cited by Jornal Notícias, the phenomenon will be driven by the persistent transport of hot and humid air — an atmospheric condition expected to sustain elevated temperatures across several regions of the country.

In Maputo province, the intense heat is forecast to affect the districts of Boane, Namaacha, Moamba, Magude, Manhiça, Marracuene and Matutuine, as well as the cities of Maputo and Matola. In Gaza, the highest temperatures are expected in the districts of Chibuto, Guijá, Mapai, Chicualacuala, Mandlakazi, Chókwè, Massingir, Mabalane, Massangena and Limpopo, in addition to the city of Xai-Xai.

In Inhambane province, the warning covers the districts of Zavala, Mabote, Funhalouro, Panda and Inharrime, where significantly elevated maximum temperatures are also anticipated. INAM noted that the atmospheric conditions driving the heatwave are expected to continue affecting the country's central region, particularly districts situated along the Zambeze valley, where very high temperatures are likewise forecast.

In response to the conditions, INAM has urged the population to adopt precautionary and safety measures throughout the heatwave period in order to reduce the risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

Recommended precautions include drinking water frequently, reducing direct sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, and paying particular attention to children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions.

The meteorological warning remains in effect for the period from 15 to 19 October, and the forecast conditions may disrupt the daily activities of populations in the affected areas.
