AFRICOM is a unified combatant command of the United States Armed Forces, responsible for coordinating military operations and security cooperation activities across the African continent.
It was established by the US Government in 2007 and is part of the United States Department of Defense’s geographic combatant command structure.
Its responsibilities include combating terrorist organisations and other transnational threats, supporting the development of the operational capabilities of African armed forces, and conducting joint military exercises with partner countries.
The U.S. Africa Command also promotes cooperation in defence and security, supports stabilisation operations and crisis response, and works to protect the interests, citizens and facilities of the United States on the African continent.

This senior-level visit affirms that security cooperation is a cornerstone of the U.S.–Mozambique relationship, as well as our desire to foster closer collaboration between American and Mozambican diplomats and military leaders. Successful security cooperation supports commerce and promotes private sector investment.
Working together to counter terrorism, protect communities, and strengthen regional security advances the interests of both countries—and helps build a safer and more prosperous future for Americans and Mozambicans.
