Niassa Secretary of State Silva Livone has called on the management of DH-Mining Development Limited to treat all its workers equally, regardless of their ethnic origins.
He stressed that everyone seeking work at the company contributes to a common goal: processing graphite at the Nipepe plant.
He made the appeal during a working visit to the facility, after employees complained of unequal treatment, particularly regarding access to health insurance.
According to the workers, health insurance has been provided only to employees of Chinese origin, to the detriment of Mozambican workers. The situation left the official upset.
“This is not good. A company must guarantee health insurance, as provided for by law, for all employees. You handle chemicals, and graphite is extremely harmful to human health. If an employee contracts an illness related to their job and has to stop working, what happens to their family? Therefore, an internal training programme needs to be put in place,” he noted.
Livone also called for compliance with the safety guidelines applicable to everyone on the premises, stressing that the use of personal protective equipment — including masks, high-visibility vests, helmets, boots and gloves — must be compulsory to prevent possible workplace accidents.
