The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has warned of a heatwave affecting the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, with maximum temperatures expected to range between 35°C and 39°C from Thursday, 15 October, until Sunday, 18 October.

According to a weather warning issued on Wednesday, 14 October, the conditions are due to the continued influx of hot, humid air masses, which are expected to affect several districts and cities across the three provinces.

In Maputo province, the phenomenon is expected to affect mainly Boane, Namaacha, Moamba, Magude, Manhiça, Marracuene and Matutuíne, as well as the cities of Maputo and Matola.

In Gaza province, the areas at risk include the districts of Chibuto, Guijá, Mapai, Chicualacuala, Mandlakazi, Chókwè, Massingir, Mabalane, Massangena and Limpopo, as well as the city of Xai-Xai.

In Inhambane province, intense heat is expected to affect mainly Zavala, Mabote, Funhalouro, Panda and Inharrime.

INAM also noted that high temperatures would continue to affect the central region of the country, particularly districts along the Zambezi Valley.

In view of the forecast, the institute recommends taking precautionary and safety measures to reduce the risks associated with intense heat.

The next INAM weather bulletin is scheduled for Thursday, 15 October, at 10:00 a.m.
