South African fintech Happy Pay has publicly launched Happy Ads, an artificial intelligence-based digital advertising platform that charges merchants only when their campaigns result in completed sales, seeking to tie marketing expenditure more directly to commercial outcomes.
Happy Pay offers interest-free instalment payments funded through an advertising network, connecting merchants with consumers who have demonstrated purchase intent. The fintech aims to help retailers attract new customers, improve conversion rates, and increase average transaction values, while simultaneously allowing consumers to split payments over time.
The new platform enables brands to promote products and offers to more than 800,000 registered Happy Pay users and two million customers across its partner network. The company also plans to integrate an additional six million users, which could significantly extend the reach of advertising campaigns.
During its pilot phase, Happy Ads generated approximately $6.1 million in sales for merchants. According to the company, campaigns reached more than 268 million impressions and delivered an average return of 20 times the advertising spend.
Unlike traditional digital advertising models, which typically charge for impressions or clicks, Happy Ads adopts a customer acquisition-based system. Merchants set the commission they are willing to pay and only incur a cost when a campaign results in a transaction that is actually completed.
The platform combines product discovery, targeted ad distribution, payment processing, and transaction tracking. Its AI-powered recommendation engine analyses users’ browsing habits, purchase history, and interests to surface products deemed relevant to each individual consumer.
According to Wesley Billett, co-founder and chief executive of Happy Pay, the model seeks to reverse the logic of traditional digital advertising, in which merchants pay for consumer attention with no guarantee of conversion into sales. In his view, the new solution shifts the focus to commercial outcomes, reducing the risk of investing in campaigns that generate no revenue.
Happy Ads allows consumers to complete purchases through Happy Pay’s interest-free instalments or via payment methods already offered by merchants. The launch follows the company’s announcement in March 2026 of a $5 million seed funding round to expand its advertising-subsidised payments network.
