A Pew Research Center study shows that concern among young Americans about artificial intelligence (AI) is rising, driven primarily by fears that the technology will eliminate jobs. For the first time since tracking began in 2021, a majority of adults under 30 say they are more worried than excited about AI.
The finding comes from a survey conducted in June in the United States, which points to growing scepticism about the impact of the technology among younger adults.
That concern has also spilled into public view at some graduation ceremonies, where university students booed speakers who highlighted the benefits of AI.
According to the Pew Research Center, 55% of Americans under 30 say they are ‘more worried than excited’ about AI — the first time since the research centre began tracking the indicator in 2021 that the figure has exceeded 50% in that age group.
Across all respondents, 52% say they are more worried than excited about the growing use of AI in daily life, up from 37% five years ago. Just 9% say they are more excited than worried, while 37% report feeling both in equal measure.
Employment Among the Top Fears
The potential loss of jobs remains one of the leading concerns associated with the technology. Currently, 71% of surveyed adults believe AI will reduce the number of jobs in the United States over the next two decades, up from 64% in 2024. Only 5% expect it to increase employment.
Among adults under 30, 73% anticipate a reduction in jobs due to AI, up from 61% two years ago. The same proportion is now observed among adults aged 30 to 64.
The concerns of younger respondents extend beyond the labour market, however. This group is also the most likely to believe that AI could have negative effects on society and on their personal lives — particularly by making it harder for people to connect with one another and by undermining creativity.
Despite these fears, young people are not turning away from the technology. The majority continue to use chatbots and other AI-based tools.
