Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has called for a deepening of economic and trade relations between Mozambique and the Russian Federation, during a working visit to Moscow aimed at reinforcing the two countries’ longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation.

According to a communiqué issued by the Presidency on Monday, 26 October, Chapo spoke to the press following a meeting with Dmitri Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. The encounter took place on the sidelines of the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit, which Chapo attended at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Chapo expressed satisfaction at the invitation and underscored the importance of maintaining close ties between the two nations and their peoples. “We must always remain united — our countries, our brother peoples,” he said.

The president explained that Mozambique’s presence in Moscow was intended to strengthen bilateral relations, with a particular focus on expanding economic and commercial exchanges. “We are here to, once again, increasingly strengthen our relations of friendship and cooperation, which are historic, and to expand them primarily into economic and trade relations,” he declared.

The 3rd Russia-Africa Summit serves as a dialogue platform between the Russian Federation and African countries, designed to deepen cooperation mechanisms and strategies across areas of mutual interest.

On the sidelines of the summit, heads of state are expected to adopt three documents: the Declaration of the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit, the Action Plan 2027–2029, and the Declaration on Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies.

This marks Chapo’s first participation in the Russia-Africa Summit, at a time when Mozambique is seeking to reinforce its bilateral relationship with Russia and broaden opportunities for economic and commercial cooperation.
