WhatsApp is developing a feature that will allow sound to be added to stickers shared in conversations, combining static or animated images with short audio clips. The development was identified by WABetaInfo, a website specialising in updates to the application, and is not yet available to users.
The tool was discovered in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.41.3 for Android and will allow the audio associated with a sticker to be played via a sound icon displayed on the image.
In addition to stickers made available by the platform itself, users will be able to create personalised versions by combining photographs or animations with short audio files. It will also be possible to convert videos into animated stickers with sound.
According to information released by WABetaInfo, audio clips will be able to run for up to ten seconds. The sound will play when the user taps on the sticker, provided the device is not in silent mode.
The application is also expected to allow users to mute stickers through a volume control, with that preference retained across subsequent conversations.
The new feature remains under development and is not yet accessible to participants in WhatsApp's beta testing programme. No release date for public availability has been announced.
