Millennium bim inaugurated the exhibition ‘Faces of Modernity: Works from the Millennium bim Collection’ on Wednesday, 21 October, at the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano (CCFM) in Maputo. The show brings together 19 works by 19 Mozambican artists, predominantly produced during the 1990s, and marks the bank’s 31st anniversary.
According to a statement from the institution, this is the second exhibition dedicated to its art collection, continuing a series that began with ‘Between Colours and Forms: Plurality of Voices’, held in October 2024, which highlighted artistic production predating Mozambican independence.
Curated by Jorge Dias, ‘Faces of Modernity’ presents works that reflect different forms of artistic expression and the transformations of Mozambican society during the 1990s. The works include oil painting, acrylic, gouache, and mixed media, on canvas and paper.
The exhibition features creations by Bela Rocha, Bento Mukeswane, Butcheca, Catarina Temporário, Ciro, Conde, Dito, Fernando Rosa, Gemuce, Gilberto Cossa, Isabel Martins, Kheto, Micas Nungo, Miro, Neto, Pedro Mourana, Silva Dunduro, Ulisses, and Zandamela.
Moisés Jorge, chairman of the board of Millennium bim, said the initiative allows the bank to share part of the artistic heritage it has assembled throughout its history with the wider public.
“This collection has been built over the course of Millennium bim’s history, but its value is not confined to the walls of the institution. By making it accessible, we share with society an important part of Mozambique’s artistic memory,” he said.
Curator Jorge Dias underlined the diversity of languages and perspectives present in the exhibition, noting that the works allow visitors to revisit a period of transformation in national artistic creation.
Millennium bim has indicated it plans to continue presenting further works from its collection in future exhibitions.
‘Faces of Modernity’ is open to the public from 22 October to 12 December at the CCFM Exhibition Hall, Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.
