The Cabo Verdean government announced on Friday, 9 October, that it will be represented at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (WB) against a backdrop of what it described as 'significant changes' in the global economy.
'The 2026 meetings are taking place in an international context marked by significant changes in markets and the world economy,' the government said in a statement cited by Lusa, highlighting several areas of concern and the need for strengthened international cooperation.
Specifically, the government pointed to 'the effects of Artificial Intelligence on employment and productivity, the challenges associated with public debt, the evolution of energy prices, and the need to reinforce international cooperation.'
The annual IMF/World Bank meetings are being held over the course of a week in Bangkok, Thailand, running from Monday 12 to 18 October.
The Cabo Verdean delegation is led by State Secretary of Finance Maria José Lopes. The agenda includes bilateral meetings, technical sessions, and high-level engagements with officials from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank Group, and international partners.
'Among the ministerial engagements, particular attention is drawn to the round table on accelerating measures to create more and better jobs, and the ministerial conclave on human capital, focused on mobilising private capital for skills development in the AI era,' the government explained.
A bilateral meeting is also scheduled with Mathias Jourdain de Alencastro, Secretary for International Affairs at Brazil's Ministry of Finance.
