Mozambique: When Gaza’s governor comes calling at a farmer’s machamba in Songatcheca — Photos

On the second day of his working visit to Mapai district, Gaza Province Governor Alfeu Cuna visited farmer Nelson Mucuio at his machamba in Songatcheca.

The governor congratulated Nelson Mucuio on his efforts and urged him to continue his work and increase investment in agricultural production, with a view to creating more employment opportunities for young people.

The farmer has 16 hectares, ten of which are currently under cultivation, growing watermelon, tomatoes, cabbage and other vegetables.

Nelson Mucuio’s farm uses a drip irrigation system, a technique that saves water, reduces waste and increases productivity. It employs 12 workers and supplies markets in Mapai, Xai-Xai and Maputo, providing income for families involved in the production chain.

After touring the fields and speaking with the workers, the provincial governor praised the organisation, discipline and results achieved, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to food security.

As the provincial executive, we recognise this farmer’s efforts and reaffirm our willingness to continue supporting initiatives that create jobs, increase production, ensure food supplies and promote sustainable development in communities,” said Alfeu Cuna, who presented Mucuio with seeds and irrigation equipment to strengthen the machamba’s production capacity.

Governor Cuna also encouraged Nelson Mucuio to expand his production area. Addressing the workers, he urged them to respect their employer, show dedication and take responsibility for carrying out their duties, stressing that “there is no employment, only work” as a way of encouraging a stronger work ethic.

For his part, Nelson Mucuio thanked the Governor of Gaza Province for the visit, describing it as an incentive to continue investing in agricultural production, expand his cultivated area and contribute to the development of Mapai district by creating employment opportunities.
