Mozambique’s Tax Authority (AT) will recruit 650 staff nationwide, including tax officers and guards, to strengthen revenue collection, tax inspections and customs control, according to a recruitment notice consulted by Lusa on Thursday.

The notice states that the AT is opening a public recruitment process to fill 650 vacancies, including 350 in the technical career stream, for the position of Second-Class Tax Technician, and 300 in the basic career stream, for the position of First-Class Tax Assistant (Guards).

According to the recruitment notice, approved by an order issued by the president of the AT on 29 October, the new staff will be distributed across all the country’s provinces and the institution’s central services, with the largest numbers of vacancies in Maputo province (90), Maputo city (82), and Sofala, Manica and Cabo Delgado provinces (60 each).

The recruitment is intended to strengthen two areas considered central to the functioning of the tax administration. Tax technicians will be assigned duties relating to tax management and inspections, tax procedures, taxpayer services and the application of tax legislation, as reflected in the subjects specified for the candidates’ assessment.

Tax assistants, described in the notice as guards, will reinforce institutional security, support customs and inspection operations, maintain internal discipline and protect the Tax Authority’s premises and operations.

The application process will remain open for 30 days, starting on 16 November.

The 2025 General State Account shows that 535 audits were completed during the year, equivalent to 134% of the annual target.

These audits, the document adds, “resulted in additional tax assessed” totalling 16.7447 billion meticais (€225.2 million), of which 1.5864 billion meticais (€21.4 million) was actually collected.

Meanwhile, according to the General State Account, 4,050 company accounting files were reviewed, equivalent to 135% of the annual target of 3,000 files set for 2025.

These reviews resulted in additional tax assessments totalling 5.5861 billion meticais, of which 320.9 million meticais (€4.3 million) was collected, according to the report.

The document also confirms that, as part of the development and implementation of a strategy “focused on taxing income generated in the economy, including measures to combat tax evasion”, 1,106 seizures of goods were carried out. These comprised 663 cases of smuggling, 201 of customs evasion and 242 involving other offences, resulting in the recovery of 176.4 million meticais (€2.3 million) in customs duties and other tax obligations.

Lusa previously reported that Mozambique was stepping up tax audits, taxing online sales and planning to register 200,000 new taxpayers as part of its strategy to mobilise domestic revenue in 2025.
