Mozambique’s state revenues grew by 10.3% by September, while expenditure fell by 7% over the same period, year-on-year, according to budget execution data.”
According to a government report, state revenues stood at 291.0885 billion meticais (€3.927 billion) by September, while expenditure stood at 292.1845 billion meticais (€3.942 billion).
Revenue collected in the first nine months of 2026 represented 71.5% of the annual forecast, while expenditure executed accounted for 55% of the budget approved for this year, according to the third-quarter execution report on the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE).
Despite the increase in revenue and the reduction in expenditure compared with the same period in 2025, budget execution recorded a negative balance of around 1.096 billion meticais (€14.8 million) by September.
The document also indicates that the public debt stock reached 1.137 trillion meticais (€15.35 billion), with the Government arguing in the report for the need to strengthen revenue mobilisation, rationalise expenditure, improve the quality of public investment and ensure the sustainability of state finances.
In foreign trade, goods exports totalled US$3.747 billion (€3.227 billion) between January and September, a year-on-year decline of 3.8%, while imports grew by 7.33% to US$4.156 billion (€3.579 billion).
This performance resulted in a trade deficit of US$409 million (€352 million), with the Government considering it necessary to accelerate the growth of domestic production and export capacity in order to reduce external imbalances.
The report is expected to be reviewed by the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, as part of the monitoring of the implementation of the 2026 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget.
