Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) has authorised HS Mining to establish a temporary diversion of the R525 road, which connects the city of Manica to the locality of Mavonde, in the interior of Manica district, to make way for mining operations in the area.

According to a note seen by Domingo, the authorisation was issued by ANE’s Road Safety Department, which is part of its Central Road Maintenance and Safety Services. The department stipulated that the mining company must build an alternative road with characteristics equal to or better than those of the existing road, as well as ensure its regular maintenance and install temporary road signs, among other requirements.

Domingo has learned that the authorisation was communicated to ANE’s Provincial Delegation in Manica and to the provincial directorates of Environment and Mineral Resources and Energy.

According to sources linked to road management, similar authorisations have been granted to several mining companies in Manica district, where mining activities involve around 30 companies. HS Mining is among those authorised by the Government to resume gold mining following the temporary suspension imposed by the Council of Ministers on 30 September last year.
