The Mozambican Government is holding talks with the Tanzanian authorities to secure recognition of dual nationality for Mozambican citizens residing in that country, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has said.

Maria de Fátima Manso was speaking during a meeting with the Mozambican community in Tanzania, where she explained that the process depends on an agreement with the local authorities, as its implementation requires the Tanzanian Government’s approval.

“We have to reach an understanding with those who will give us that permission, which is the local Government,” the official said, quoted today by local media, referring to the ongoing contacts with the authorities of that country.

The Secretary of State assured the community that Mozambique would continue its efforts to find a solution that would allow its citizens to maintain their legal and family ties with their country of origin, advocating continued dialogue with the Tanzanian counterpart.

The official also called for the community to organise itself, in coordination with its leaders and the Mozambican High Commission, to identify the number of citizens interested in dual nationality and the documents they need, in order to facilitate the follow-up of the process.

“To be better organised and reach a larger number of citizens, our leaders, in coordination with our High Commission, will carry out a survey,” she said, advocating the identification of the needs of Mozambicans residing in Tanzania.

Maria de Fátima Manso highlighted the importance of preserving family and community ties with Mozambique, considering that the connection to the country of origin should be passed on to new generations and strengthened through organisation and community associations.

“I am Mozambican. My son is Mozambican, my son’s son is Mozambican. We will not sever this bond we have in our family,” she said.
