Fish production at the Beira Fishing Port reached 5,049 tonnes by September this year, against an annual target of 7,350 tonnes. However, the sector’s performance continues to be constrained by fuel shortages and operational limitations affecting the fishing fleet.
According to António Remédio, director of the Beira Fishing Port, this production represents around 69% of the annual target, leaving 2,301 tonnes to reach the established goal.
Quoted by the newspaper Domingo, the port director believes the target can still be achieved, provided no new constraints arise and fuel supply difficulties are overcome. These difficulties are currently forcing several vessels to remain at the quays for long periods instead of returning to sea for further fishing trips.
António Remédio revealed that, in the first nine months of the year, vessel dockings fell by around 5%, while the time spent at the quays increased by 4%. This situation affected fish handling and the provision of port services.
The director explained that the port’s operations depend on the regularity of fishing activities, from vessels departing for sea to their return to unload their catch and replenish supplies of fuel, water and other essential goods.
