Graça Machel has been awarded the Prémio Excelência Lusófona (Lusophone Excellence Award) – Human Rights category at the 10th Gala Prémios da Lusofonia, held on 10 October 2026 in Estoril, Cascais, Portugal, as part of celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

The distinction recognises a career spanning several decades dedicated to defending human rights, promoting education and protecting the rights of women and children, contributing to the construction of fairer, more inclusive and supportive societies.

“Graça Machel’s story is a reference point for Lusophone and African women,” the organisers of the Prémios da Lusofonia said.

The award was received on Graça Machel’s behalf by Mozambique’s ambassador to Portugal, Stela Zeca, who will subsequently present it to the honouree.

The Gala Prémios da Lusofonia recognises individuals who have distinguished themselves through their careers and contributions in areas such as literature, citizenship, sport, human rights, the media, the arts and culture.
