Millennium bim marked 31 years of operations in Mozambique on 25 October, in a trajectory defined by the expansion of banking services, investment in digital transformation, and financing of the national economy. The institution currently serves more than two million clients through a network of approximately 200 branches spread across all provinces of the country.
Founded in 1995 through a strategic partnership between the Mozambican state and Banco Comercial Português (BCP), Millennium bim's shareholder structure includes national public and private institutions as well as current and former employees, who together hold one third of the bank's capital. Since 2017, the bank has distributed more than 12 billion meticais to its Mozambican shareholders.
According to a statement sent to Diário Económico, the institution has played a role in modernising the national financial system, having been a pioneer in introducing ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and debit and credit cards. The bank is currently focused on upgrading its branch network and developing digital services, seeking to combine in-person customer service with technological solutions that broaden access to banking.
"Millennium bim is a bank built in Mozambique and in service of the country. The participation of Mozambican shareholders, the dedication of our staff and the trust of our clients have been decisive in building the solidity we have achieved. It is this long-term relationship that we want to preserve and project into the future," said Rui Pedro, Chief Executive Officer of Millennium bim.
As part of its service modernisation drive, the bank has introduced MPoint spaces at selected branches, designed to handle treasury operations for corporate clients and mobile wallet agents, thereby streamlining customer service. The institution has also implemented a queue management system and adopted biometric identification, automated data reading, and document validation mechanisms in account opening and maintenance processes, with the aim of simplifying procedures, strengthening security, and reducing waiting times.
Digital transformation is another of Millennium bim's strategic priorities. The bank has surpassed one million mobile banking users and continues to invest in the development of its Smart IZI application, through which it began offering fully digital account opening in 2026, eliminating the need for clients to visit a branch.
The bank states that the ability to use the application without consuming mobile data helps reduce barriers to financial access and promote banking inclusion. Among recently introduced features is the option to split purchases made with a debit card. In parallel, the institution has reinforced the security mechanisms of its digital channels to increase transaction protection and user confidence.
In the corporate segment, Millennium bim has been strengthening specialised support through Millennium CIB, its corporate and investment banking division. The offering includes treasury management solutions, investment financing, and international trade services tailored to the needs of businesses across different sectors.
This strategy covers large projects as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) integrated into their respective supply chains, seeking to extend the benefits of investment across the Mozambican business community. The bank has also invested in upgrading its corporate internet banking service, introducing features designed to simplify processes and increase clients' autonomy in managing their business finances.
The bank's investments in innovation and service quality earned Millennium bim five awards in 2026, conferred by Euromoney and Global Finance, including recognition as Best Bank in Mozambique and accolades for its digital banking offering for retail and corporate clients.
On the financial side, the institution recorded loan portfolio and deposit growth above market trends, reinforcing its position in the national banking sector. As of 30 June 2026, the gross loan portfolio reached approximately 54 billion meticais, an increase of 11.8% year-on-year, while deposits totalled approximately 180 billion meticais, up 10.4% compared with the same period in 2025.
According to the statement, these results reflect stronger lending activity to households and businesses as well as improved savings mobilisation. The bank considers that the strength of its financial position enables it to continue supporting investment and economic development in Mozambique while delivering sustainable returns to shareholders.
The commitment to national development extends to community engagement through the corporate social responsibility programme "Mais Moçambique Pra Mim". The initiative covers areas including health, education, financial literacy, culture, sport, social action, and the environment, promoting human and community development projects in partnership with local institutions and organisations.
In this context, Millennium bim received the award for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Action at the Mozambique COMARP Awards 2026, a distinction that also recognises employee involvement in volunteering and community participation initiatives.
Looking ahead, the bank intends to maintain its investment in technological innovation, service improvement, and closer client engagement, continuing its growth strategy and support for the national economy.
"Confident in the future of Mozambique, Millennium bim will continue to invest in innovation and service quality, reinforcing its digital leadership and proximity to clients. In the years ahead, the bank remains committed to contributing to the development of the country, meeting the needs of those who live, work and invest here," the statement concludes.
