Asia’s major equity markets closed Tuesday’s session in positive territory, as investors demonstrated renewed appetite for technology stocks following news that Anthropic — the company behind the Claude artificial intelligence chatbot — has filed for an initial public offering on the US Nasdaq exchange.
The MSCI Asia Pacific benchmark was trading up 0.72% after the region’s main bourses had already closed. Regional gains were led by South Korean and Japanese indices, both of which carry significant technology weighting, with the Kospi advancing more than 3% and the Nikkei 225 jumping 1.73%.
“Anthropic’s IPO filing is expected to reignite interest in the AI sector,” Hideyuki Ishiguro, chief strategist at Nomura Asset Management, told Bloomberg. Semiconductor stocks “are poised for a short-term recovery, given low valuations and improving technical signals,” he added.
No date has yet been set for the offering, but the aim is to begin formal procedures within two weeks. Bloomberg had previously reported that the creator of Claude is seeking to match or even surpass the record set by SpaceX in June, which stood at $1.77 trillion. Anthropic’s valuation could be set at $2 trillion.
China’s session was more subdued, with domestic shares coming under pressure following disappointing results from British bank HSBC, which has heavy exposure to the Hong Kong market. The lender slumped 5.56% on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange after its pre-tax profit came in below expectations.
Markets had anticipated $9.69 billion in pre-tax profit for the third quarter, but the result came in at $9.63 billion. The British bank’s underperformance is expected to weigh on the European banking sector, with Euro Stoxx 50 futures pointing to an opening decline of 0.6%.
