Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has congratulated Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election as President of Brazil, following the second round of the Brazilian presidential election held on 25 October.
In a message delivered on behalf of the Mozambican government and people, Chapo wished Lula success in his new term and expressed hopes for prosperity for the Brazilian people.
The head of state highlighted the historic bonds of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between Mozambique and Brazil, underscoring the linguistic and cultural affinities that unite the two countries.
In the same message, Chapo expressed his expectation that the two nations would deepen and diversify their bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of their respective peoples.
Chapo also reaffirmed Mozambique's commitment to reinforcing the bilateral partnership and maintaining continuity in the existing relationship between the two countries.
Lula da Silva secured 63,388,523 votes against 59,099,143 for Flávio Bolsonaro, with 98.76% of polling stations counted. The former trade unionist and leader of the left-wing PT party managed to overturn a deficit of more than two million votes recorded in the first round.
In that earlier round, right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro had obtained 47.03% of valid votes against 45.16% for Lula da Silva — a difference of 2,224,965 votes. Since Brazil introduced its two-round presidential election system in 1989, no candidate who had finished second in the first round had ever gone on to win the runoff.
More than 158.7 million voters were registered to cast ballots across some 564,000 electronic voting machines distributed across 5,571 Brazilian cities, as well as 186 cities abroad, including Lisbon, Porto, and Faro.
Cooperation between Mozambique and Brazil has been gaining fresh momentum, particularly following the official visit by President Lula da Silva to Maputo last November.
More recently, the governments of Mozambique and Brazil signed a memorandum of understanding in Brasília covering public finance management and development financing, further reinforcing bilateral cooperation.
The agreement was formalised by Mozambique's Minister of Finance Carla Loveira and Brazil's Secretary for External Relations Mathias Alencastro, in a ceremony that underscored both countries' shared commitment to sustainable development.
