Angola's National Statistics Institute (INE) last week launched preparatory work for the 2027 Census of Enterprises, Establishments and Businesses (REMPE 2027), an operation designed to identify and locate all economic units operating across the country.

According to a statement issued by the institute, the process will identify existing establishments and businesses, record their geographic locations, and organise work areas to guide field data-collection teams.

The organisational phase is intended to ensure broader coverage of the census and to facilitate the work of teams on the ground. The operation will encompass all fixed and visible establishments and businesses, regardless of their size or level of formalisation.

Information gathered in the field will be supplemented with data drawn from administrative records, the statement said. This combination will allow the INE to build a more comprehensive picture of economic units operating in the country and to improve its underlying statistical database.

Through REMPE 2027, the INE aims to obtain up-to-date data on the structure of the national economic fabric and the geographic distribution of economic units. The operation will also enable the institute to update its register of statistical units, which consolidates information on those entities.

The census will further contribute to refining the samples used in economic surveys and to revising the base year for the national accounts, strengthening the statistical foundation needed to analyse trends in the national economy.

The data collected will support the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public policy, giving public institutions access to current information on the country's economic landscape to underpin their decision-making.

The information produced is also expected to assist private-sector actors in their own decision-making processes. In this way, REMPE 2027 aims to make available comprehensive data on companies, establishments and businesses operating across Angola, contributing to a more current understanding of the national economic fabric.
