Instagram has launched a new feature that allows users to load an existing video as a reference during Reels recording, making it easier to replicate choreography, movements, and other popular trends on the platform. The tool displays the original video in a small overlay window on the camera screen, enabling the user to follow along while preparing their own recording.
Announced by Meta on its creator-focused page on Threads, the ‘Use as Reference’ option allows users to play, pause, and replay the original video as many times as needed. The overlay window can also be repositioned anywhere on the screen according to the user’s preference.
To activate the feature, users simply open a Reel of less than 90 seconds in length, tap the three-dot menu, and select ‘Use as Reference’. The video then appears as a small window superimposed over the live camera feed.
The tool also includes a countdown timer to help synchronise the start of the recording with the movements or music in the reference video.
In its initial phase, the feature is available exclusively on iOS devices. Meta has indicated it plans to extend access to Android devices, though no release date has been announced.
With this addition, Instagram aims to streamline the creation of Reels inspired by existing content, eliminating the need for users to memorise sequences or toggle back and forth between the original video and the recording screen.
