Egypt has been recognised by US-based Ookla with a Speedtest Award for having the fastest fixed internet in Africa, based on speed measurements conducted during the first half of 2026, retaining the continental lead in this indicator for the fifth consecutive year, according to Egyptian authorities.
The award was announced at the Network X 2026 conference, held from 13 to 15 October in Vienna, Austria.
The distinction is based on an analysis of speed tests carried out by users through the Speedtest platform, which benchmarks the performance of fixed internet connections across different countries.
Egyptian authorities said the result reflects investments made in modernising telecommunications networks, particularly in expanding fibre-optic infrastructure and increasing data transmission capacity.
The award was received by a delegation led by Mohamed Shamroukh, chief executive of Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority, representing the Minister of Communications and Information Technology.
At the ceremony, Shamroukh highlighted progress made in improving fixed internet networks and called for continued investment to meet growing demand for digital services.
He also underscored the importance of independent network performance assessments, arguing that such indicators incentivise operators to raise service quality.
The recognition comes as Egypt seeks to expand high-speed internet coverage and strengthen the infrastructure required for the digital transformation of its economy.
